Google Ranking-update

It seems that yesterday, Google did something to the SERPs. At the moment, there are lots of discussions in the forums and this abysmal injustice is being lamented. For me, this looks like a backlink-update in conjunction with some fiddling on the value of some types of links. Any other ideas?

Update: Matt Cutts has validated the backlink-theory: „Just to give you a heads-up, I think a new set of backlinks (and possibly PageRank) will probably be visible relatively soon; I'm guessing within the next few days.“
