While being hailed as a panacea at the moment, if we take a closer look at “User Generated Content”, most of the time it turns out to be inferior trashdata. In connection with the Web2.0, the content supplied by a websites visitors is readily depicted to be trend of tomorrow. The siteoperators are only supplying the framework, the clickstock will surely bring in the (work intensive) content – and the revenue will start gushing out. But even for showcase projects like wikipedia it becomes apparent that the content quality is often poor. If you are concerned with having a certain standard of quality you need to moderate and modify the content which means the advantages of free content are melting away. I believe that the system of user generated content can work for some projects, but in the majority of those cases, the siteoperator will need to construct a solid groundwork. In such a case, comments or corrections by users would still be desirable but the quality would be guaranteed.
