Google-study on the lifespan of harddrives

Johannes Beus
If, like Google, you operate a large number of computers, you will also often acquire interesting data that do not have anything to do with your actual business. In a new study, three Google employees have now evaluated the lifespan of harddrives in the Googleservers depending on different factors such as age or ambient temperature, for example. The storage media in question are standard-consumer-hardware with PATA or SATA-connections, 5.400 or 7.200 revolutions per minute and a capacity between 80 and 400 gigabytes. It is interesting that the evaluation comes to the conclusion that the failrate of harddrives is not influenced by its activity or its “mileage” - in fact, the manufacturer is much more important.
