Search Quality Rater, the unknown entityJohannes Beus
It should not be a secret anymore that Google is using students to check the quality of the SERPs – the jobs are being announced publicly. My interest was in the question if the access by the quality raters was confined to the area around Hamburg or if they were scattered all over Germany, so I painted it onto a map of Germany. The larger the circle the more pageviews came from a city. It can be seen nicely how the quality raters seem to be spread out through the whole country without any special strongholds. If we take a closer look at the IP-addresses of those pageviews, we can see that that they are quite often University-proxies – seems to be a typical job for students. But we also have the Arbeitsamt (Federal Employment Office) and the public administration of Hesse seem to be concerned with the quality of the Germans favorite searchengine. Even though Google did not mimic Microsoft's, by now, near-legendary mistake – where the e-mail address of the MSN-quality-people were transferred in the referrer – even Google has some static IP-addresses in their arsenal which can be matched to specific people ...
