What is the price of Searchengineoptimization?

Johannes Beus
“How can it be that I can get searchengineoptimization at MyHammer for 9 Euro while other are asking for 1.000 Dollar per hour?” – You have finished setting up your new onlineshop, photographed and described the hand-laced products nicely and – no one is buying a thing. No problem, there is still some money left, lets just do some advertising. Since you are using searchengines yourself you decide to invest that money in searchengineoptimization. Now you are tasked with finding a person or company which you can hand the money over to and that is where the problems start.

What is searchengineoptimization?
The reason why there is such an immense range of prices is the fact that you have a multitude of different products and services that are being offered under the term of “searchengineoptimization”. The spectrum ranges from the aforementioned MyHammer-offer, where the service provider will use a 7 year old tool to register their customers in 1001 searchengines like Fireball and Altavista up to the specialized SEO-consultants, who are in possession of years of experience and are therefore able to help with very specific problems. The first step should therefore be the clarification of what is needed exactly. The job description “searchengineoptimization siteXY.com” is as unspecific as the desire to buy some sort of car. Some of the typical SEO-services for small to medium sites are:

  • Keywordresearch – which keywords and keyword-combinations are able to generate qualified traffic, how many searches are to be expected per day/month, how should these keywords be used.

  • Competitor analysis – who are the competitors on the market, what sites are they running, which keywords are being optimized there. It is usually useful to take a look at more than one competitor.

  • Page analysis – evaluation of the established website from the searchengines point of view (URL-structure, searchenginefriendliness, linkstructure, HTML, etc) combined with recommendations of what should be changed. This is also where there should be an evaluation and suggestion of points that have a negative impact on the searchengines ( duplicate content, correct error-codes, supplemental index, default domain, etc). Additionally this is where often advice is called for about the direction that the site could progress in to meet the requirements of those searching and the searchengines as best as possible.

  • Link building – links are the Internet's currency and are vital for a successful searchengineoptimization. This means there is a need to work out a concept that can increase the number of incoming links. Besides the possibilities of buying links or commissioning a searchengineoptimizer with the task of linkbuilding, you can also examine such possibilities as content/linkbaiting. Seeing that linkbuilding is an integral component, making mistakes here are going to be especially grave, but more on that later.

  • Reporting/Monitoring – How are you going to measure the success of the projects searchengineoptimization? You will need to choose the correct tools and analysis software for this task and use them properly. Another important thing are regular reports which document the process.

Since this article has already gotten rather long I will use tomorrows article to continue with the selection of the correct services and the chronological sequence of implementations and payments.
