Up until now “spam” was quite contained in Google's local search: Since it seems that Google is using sufficiently secure methods of authentication for companies who want to place themselves on Google maps or wish to change their entries, we could assume that no gaps had been located. This seems to have changed with the possibility of “bulk-uploads”. While every entry to the “Local Business Center” is verified with a code-bearing postcard to the entered address, it seems that this is not the case for a bulk-upload. While this was essentially supposed to be a method to help ease the administration of entries for companies who have a multitude of branches, an eager-marketing agency of a US-computercompany created, optimized and uploaded an entry for every possible zip code in the USA. This quickly caused quite a stir in the USA, the CEO of the computercompany called back their service provider and the entries have disappeared – though this will not have solved the problem and it should only be a matter of time until we get the first copycats.
