Is Google trying to make Speech searchable?
Google has – quietly – introduced an interesting improvement to You Tube:For the US-presidential campaigns, one can not only watch the candidates but can henceforth also search through the videos. Through automated voice-recognition one can not only search the title but the complete “content” of the video and jump straight to that spot in the feed.
A while ago, Google started a free directory assistance in the USA with “1-800-GOOG-411”, which many assumed to have the acquisition of a large number of “voice-samples” as its goal. There seem to have been advancements in this technology so that it is now being tested in a small, controlled area of You Tube. I am curious how long it will take Google until it is ready to use its voice-recognition on a broader front and when it will be used for the web index – there are enough possibilities such as podcasts, etc.
