Scrapers and aggregates
Those of you who believe that sites that have no content themselves have either died out or are not successful anymore have to, only, look at the list – about a fourth of all winners could be assigned to this category. The first example can be found on the pole-position: folkd.com, a “classic” social-bookmarking-service. Seeing that the site has reached a certain minimum size, it is linked from (very) many sites through the well known social-bookmarking-integration below the content. Based on the SISTRIX linkdata, we can see nicely how widespread this seems to be. Oh well, it is pretty hard to do anything wrong with this much linkpower backing you up. It seems that colleagues seem to have also noticed that folkd.com ranks nicely: if we take a look at the “bookmarks” for the tag Potenzmittel (potency medicine) we can easily keep count of the selection of the sites that were bookmarked voluntarily due to their quality but being on position 6 for the keyword they are surely profitable.
Websitewiki.de is the second example. It is a one-to-one copy of Aboutus.org – in a wiki-system every domain will automatically be fitted with a page containing a few default informations (webserver, IP-address and stuff like that), they they will try to get it ranking and if that works out the enthusiastic websiteoperators will surely provide new links and content by themselves. I am curious if websitewiki.de will have hold its ground in Germany, I can find next to no relevance in any search entry.
Penalty survival
Even in this list with the winners of 2008 we can observe that sometimes others will have “some problems”: Travelscout24.de should have had a noticeable decline in organic traffic for a few month but now they are once again well situated (top-5 for keywords like “Urlaub” (vacation), “Frühbucher” (early bird registration), “Fernreise” (long-distance travel), “Hotels” and similar keywords) and even Kelkoo.de (which belongs to Yahoo after all), which was not so successful for a long time, is once again ranking in sections.
Interesting activities
For docmorris.de, it is quite noticeable that the domain also ranks very well in Google for a number of generic terms like “internetapotheke” (online-pharmacy), “versandapotheke” (mail-order-pharmacy) and also for names of drugs. I did not dissect this in every detail, but while going over the site I noticed that besides their solid Onpage-optimization, the domain also has a surprising number of backlinks from health insurances or other authorities in the health care sector. Some of these links are so favorably designed that I can not believe them to come along by pure chance – in this case this is perfectly legitimate though and I also do not believe that Docmorris has paid for these links seeing that health insurers are also profiting from the recommendation through the lower costs. This makes the domain a nice example for linkbuilding that is not based on the pure purchase or other weird methods.
Suite101.de shows that it is possible to work with lots (and lots and lots!) of subdomains: currently the SISTRIX Toolbox will find a whopping 1.236 different hostnames for this domain in the Googleindex. Those who are planning to do something similar should keep the danger of double-listings in mind.
