Google Penalties
For each and every domain in the first few ranks, we can assume that they were slammed with a Google-Penalty – be it a manual or an automatic penalty is irrelevant as far as the results are concerned. Rank number 1, onlygame.de, is an especially descriptive example for this: In the week from 07.28 to 08.04 the ranking went down rapidly and if we take a look at the keyword-distribution it becomes clear that, across the board, all rankings were depreciated by 40 ranks. We can only guess what the actual reasons for this was, but when I take a look at the backlinks for the domain, I can find every (dirty) method that is sold as “quick and cheap backlinkbuilding”.
Webcatalogs
The accumulation of webcatalogs in this list should make it clear which status some of them are enjoying with Google. In my eyes, pixel-partisan.de is a special case – here, I believe that no one helped manually but that (probably through clumsy programming) an automatic filter is regularly visiting the site and depriving the domain of searchengineusers. I added the traffic values for heise.de and pcwelt.de to the diagram to make the amount of traffic in this comparison more obvious.
Unsuccessful Relaunches
A few domains on the list show that the relaunch of a site can pose a serious risk to the Google-ranking. Pretty high up we find stellenmarkt.de. It seems that they did a relaunch in the beginning of October which strongly pulled down their Google-ranking for a multitude of nice keywords. Being a SEO, it nearly causes me physical pain to see such a course of action – I would think that with relatively little time and effort they could reach a noticeably increase in visitors by getting rid of the OnPage-errors, especially with the strength and number of nice backlinks that the domain sports. I have already written about the Tui.com relaunch here and there has not been much improvement in recent month. The relaunch of Audi.de is rather current – the searchengine-crawlers do not get far anymore thanks to JavaScript and Flash, which causes them to just go to more satisfying domains instead.
Stagnation is Regression
Those who do not constantly work on their sites have to expect to be overtaken by the competition. This can be nicely seen in the case of parsimony.net: once “the” Forumhost on the Internet, now the service is continuously going down. This also shows up in the Google-ranking – small amount of users = little content = few links = worst ranking. There is no sudden cliff due to some errors, just a continuous adaptation of the ranking towards reality. For me, the online-presence of Vanityfair falls into the same category. They seem to have also somewhat missed the connection to the current developments.
