Google Productsearch with an impressive growth-rate

Johannes Beus
A few month ago, I wrote a little piece on Google's Productsearch. Back then, the main focus was Google's noticeable expansion of their own productsearch- and comparisonengine – today, I analyzed those numbers for the past few month. If we look at the amount of searchqueries for which Google shows the productsearch-integration, we do not see much of a change compared to the beginning of the year:

Anteil Google Produktsuche an SERPs

The rate stays at around 8% of all keywords. It gets interesting when we take a look at the percentage that Google itself takes up within the productsearch-integration. Here we can see nicely how they put something in motion at the beginning of April.

While 10 to 12 percent might not be much at first sight, we do get a different picture if we take a closer look at the keywords for which Google pushes its own products into the SERPS: computers, digital cameras, notebooks, cell phones, mp3 players, wii – exactly those keywords that would probably be chosen by everyone that had the chance to fiddle with a few lines of code on their own searchengine. Here we the change in color:

For those keywords that drive a lot of traffic, Google will show their own products for nearly half of the times the productsearch-integration is shown. When we look at the longtail, we see a totally different picture; in those cases, it seems that the quality of Google's productsearch is not high enough and so there they are still using the shops directly. It will be interesting to see how this might change in the coming month – Don't be evil.

Now for something different: Rain-forest wants to be saved and at the moment, ebay has an alternative to the burdening of your liver due to the increased consumption of Krombacher-beercrate: Mediadonis is auctioning off the last ticket for the SEOktoberfest for this worthy cause. Where else can you use part of your profits (which would otherwise be devoured by the IRS) to pay for an excellent workshop and help your conscience at the same time?
