IndexWatch 11/2009Johannes Beus
The sounds and smell of the Christmas fair reminds us that it is already December. Last months IndexWatch-numbers are in, too, so here we go with the winners and losers in last months' Google-index. As always, these numbers are based on data from the SISTRIX-Visibilityindex. As per usual, we start with the winners:Winners
Cosmiq.de was formerly known as iq.lycos.de – they did a 301 from the old subdomain to the new domain, which makes it the highest gain on this list. If we take a closer look, we notice that the content on the new domain is nowhere near in rankings to that on the old lycos.de: while the Visibilityindex had a value of about 100 before the move, it has now lost about half its value and leveled out at around 50. It will be interesting to see if this value will rise in the next weeks to month or if it will stagnate at this comparatively low score. We finally have a well known SEO-domain in here: Abakus managed to gain a lot of visibility in the Google-SERPs in the last 4 weeks, through the use of a subdomain. It will be interesting to see if their “Keyword-Trends” are enough of an added value to stay listed in Google. The large jump by Google.at is due to Googles Duplicate Content problems. In this case it is due to the translation feature in Google. This feature can be reached by a multitude of different URLs and since Google also owns a lot of country-domains, they can also be used. For example: www.translate.google.de, translate.google.de, translate.google.de/translate_t?hl=en and a number of other variants. All of them are regularly rotating for the ranking to such traffic-strong keywords as “translate” or “translation”. We can see this nicely if we look at the Visibilityindex for the subdomains. But seeing as there is no such thing as a duplicate content problem … Losers
Last months closing down of Geocities.com has been reported on by many, now we can see the effects right here. I'm actually sad, I don't want to know how many unique animated Gifs were lost forever when the site was shut down. As far as the rest is concerned, we have the well known mix between domain-migrations (as we can see with the move of iq.lycos.de to cosmiq.de) and 'linkbuilding'-penalties. The site on watches probably did not get by Google's quality-Cerberus with links like this, this or this one. As far as the complete disappearance of intergastro.de from the index a few days ago is concerned, we can only speculate. I would be surprised if the few hidden links on the frame-page were enough to get the whole domain booted …
