Google Caffeine is liveJohannes Beus
It took quite a while longer than originally announced: according to Google, they finished their new infrastructure and send them out to their datacenters. This update goes by the name of “Caffeine” and will act as the foundation for a faster crawling and indexing of new content, so that it can also be found.A few month ago, I held a talk on this topic at the Campixx, in which I took a guess in which direction this Caffeine-trip will go. Looking back on that talk, I was not altogether wrong with my assumptions – with the help of Caffeine, Google is departing from the concept of static indexes, which are consistently renewed at set intervals. Some of you might still remember that for a long time, Google had some hints in the SERPs that some returned sites were from the “supplemental index”, which meant they were not necessarily hot-off-the-press. Thanks to Caffeine, Google is now able to send new content directly into the index. Even though Google is stressing that there will be no changes to the ranking (for now), I can still think of a few possible changes: seeing how the index has grown once again, many of the ranking-signals will now yield new values. This might cause some movement in the positioning of a few domains. I am also quite sure that Google will not leave the numerous new possibilities of incorporating current signals into the ranking unused for too long – let's see what the future will hold.
