Google tidies up the SERPs

Johannes Beus
There were hints about it all week, but thanks to some new SISTRIX Toolbox data, we have some comprehensive facts: Google went to war against certain types of websites and is systematically chasing them off the SERPs. When we look at the websites with the highest loss in visibility this week, we will find icons domains like Mister-Wong.de with a loss of 95%. Here the VisibilityIndex-trend for the domain as a visualization aid:

Sichtbarkeitsindex Mister-Wong.de

While the ups and downs of the past years seemed rather organic, this week saw a noticeable drop which only happens when a Google penalty goes into effect. While Mister-Wong.de is surely the most prominent victim here, there are numerous other domains that lost a massive amount of visibility during the past week, all of which fit a certain pattern. To get a feel for this, here we have a number of examples with their change in visibility between one week ago and today:

It might seem like Google is just getting rid of domains that do not have a lot of useful content, but I think that would oversimplify the situation. We also have domains like bankenverband.de that seem to be affected – where it seems as though the accumulation of “money-keywords” might have been the reason for the drop.
