For years the tenor was that computer, meaning algorithms, and not humans should decide on the position of a website in the SERPs. For a few month now, I am observing how Google is departing from this central-position which also was a contributing factor in the success of the searchengine.
The position of Google Search Result Quality Evaluators/Coordinators is being advertised for worldwide. Not only in Dublin for the European market but also in China for Asia and Mountain View for the USA. It seems that these people are not responsible for finding mistakes in the index and removing them in cooperation with the developers but are directly pressing the red button to shoot the website in question out of the index. They are looking through high volume searchqueries as well as AdSense-Accounts for websites that are not Google-Quality-Guideline confirm. The problem here is that humans are not able to evaluate and decide as uniformly as an algorithm could do. While a site may get through the first check, it is possible that a few days later an evaluator will come by who does not like the background color and the site would be gone – quickly and permanently. Seeing that this will also happen to sites that, for years, have been offering an added value and are noticeably within the Quality-Guidelines seems to be acceptable collateral-damage.
Is this the future of the technologically-leading searchengine? Humans instead of Machines? Maybe Google should inquire at AOL, it seems that they do not have any interest in DMoz anymore ...
