According to
heise.de, the city of San Francisco as well as the Provider Earthlink and Google have signed a contract for the construction of a city-wide WLAN. The WLAN is to be free to the public – Google is supposed to contribute “innovative new applications and services” and it is expected that they are also involved in funding the project. The San Francisco WLAN could be the ideal testing-ground for many of Google's Geo-services. For example, Google could bring into action the
Patent that they have filed for AdSense for WLAN-hotspots.
